Hegel's seminal work on dialectics, The Phenomenology of Spirit (1807) from the standpoint of a present-day concern with narrative dynamics, retrospection, and reflexivity, stemming from narratology and contemporary hermeneutics of culture. Hegel's work is shown to have a remarkable power to anticipate and prepare the ground for some of the major twentieth-century developments in such fields as phenomenological analysis, the deconstruction of presence, and the application of critical dialectics to dominant cultural discourses and attitudes. Among the subjects dealt with are the dialectical perspective animating the work and its notion of absolute knowledge; the phenomenology of perception, the critique of physicalist approaches to psychology or religion, the nature of Enlightenment, the hermeneutics of suspicion, the dramaturgy of social interaction, irony, communicative roles and implied authorship, ideological appropriation, the master/slave dialectics, and philosophical perspectivism.
