Well,
allowing for a criss-crossing mix of motives (sympathy for Islam,
pacifism, anti-war, anti-Trumpism....), Pedro Sánchez is above all a
machiavellian opportunist, and being beset by corruption scandals and
mismanagement on many fronts, he sees here an opportunity to regain
influence and voters in the Spanish left (AND as an international
leftist icon as a lifesaver) The ultimate reason is electoral strategy,
and self-perpetuation in power.... which is a rational move, although I
doubt it will work for him. But perhaps we might see him heading the UN
some day!
