This paper examines the significance of the butterfly symbol in Vladimir Nabokov's story 'Christmas' (trans. of 'Rozhdestvo', 1925), in the light of an interactionalist theory of interpretation. Intertextual elements are shown to emerge through a process of critical debate, rereading and discursive interaction, as the importance and cultural signification of a work is gradually established. This paper's critical approach combines the insights of discourse analysis, narrative hermeneutics, and literary pragmatics.

Este artículo examina la significación del simbolismo de la mariposa en el relato de Vladimir Nabokov ’Navidad’ ('Christmas', trad. de 'Rozhdestvo', 1925), a la luz de una teoría interaccional de la interpretación. Se muestra cómo los elementos intertextuales emergen a través de un proceso de debate crítico, relectura e interacción discursiva, a medida que se van estableciendo gradualmente la importancia y significación cultural de un texto. El enfoque crítico de este artículo combina elementos de análisis del discurso, de  hermenéutica narrativa y de pragmática literaria.
