Robert Burton - Philautia, or Self-love

From Robert Burton's Anatomy of Melancholy, Part I, sect. 2:

Subsect. XIV, — Philautia, or Self-love, Vainglory, Praise, Honour, Immoderate Applause, Pride, overmuch Joy, etc., Causes.

Self-love, pride, and vainglory, caecus amor sui (2) [blind love of self], which Chrysostom calls one of the devil's three great nets; Bernard, "an arrow which pierceth the soul through, and slays it; a sly, insensible enemy, not perceived" (3) are main causes. Where neihter anger, lust, covetousness, fear, sorrow, etc., listen nor any other perturbation can lay hold, this will slyly and insensibly pervert us.
